Memorial Day Weekend: Tips for a Healthy, Fun-filled Holiday

Memorial Day Weekend healthy tips

The unofficial start of summer is finally here! Memorial Day Weekend is a time for friends and family to get together, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate all that we’re grateful for. If you’re looking to have some healthy fun this weekend, follow these simple tips.

Get active!

One of the best things about summer is being able to enjoy the outdoors. Make sure to take advantage of the beautiful weather and get your body moving. Join the volleyball game, frisbee match, or tag that is going on in your backyard. Go for a hike, play some tennis, or go swimming. Just make sure you’re getting in some physical activity each day.

Drink lots of water

It’s important to stay hydrated, especially when you’re spending time in the sun. Make sure to drink lots of water throughout the day, and avoid sugary drinks like sodas and juices. Drinking water will keep you full and help prevent you from overeating, or drinking too much of those alcoholic beverages. It’ll keep you hydrated in the sun and feeling refreshed.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try making your own fruit-infused water by adding some slices of lemon, lime, or watermelon to your pitcher of water.

Make smart choices

Just because it’s a holiday weekend doesn’t mean you have to completely indulge. When you’re at that BBQ, load your plate with grilled vegetables and lean protein, and avoid the fried foods. At the cookout, there are usually healthier choices like salads and fruit available, so make sure to take advantage of those.

  • Trade-in those salty potato chips and creamy dip for organic baked blue corn chips and hummus, guacamole, or salsa
  • Choose corn on the cob with a healthy butter substitute
  • Make whole-wheat pasta salad with olives, tomatoes, and roasted peppers topped with light balsamic vinegar
  • Serve lean turkey burgers
  • Serve grilled chicken breast or steak
  • Serve nitrate free hot dogs on whole wheat buns
  • For dessert, make fruit kebabs by using a wooden skewer to thread together small pieces of pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, mango, watermelon, and kiwi

And when you’re enjoying drinks with friends, try to make smart choices. If you’re drinking alcohol, alternate between alcoholic beverages and water. This will help you stay hydrated and prevent you from overindulging. And if you’re looking for a healthier cocktail, try making one with fresh fruit juice and sparkling water.

Eat in moderation

Moderation is key when it comes to food and drink. Just because unhealthy foods are available, doesn’t mean you have to eat them. Remember, you can always enjoy these things in moderation. Don’t overdo the eating. Even consuming large amounts of only healthy foods isn’t good for you. When putting food on your plate, choose a dessert size plate to control your portions.

So, there you have it! A few simple tips to help you have a healthy and fun Memorial Day Weekend. Just remember to get active, drink lots of water, and make smart choices, and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying the holiday weekend guilt-free!

And most importantly, enjoy your time with friends and family. Happy Memorial Day!
