Okay, I’ll admit it.
I do my fair share of binge-watching. Particularly if I’m watching one of my favorite shows like Jack Ryan on Prime TV.
As I sat on the couch last night (trying to justify doing nothing) I realized…there are some great lessons we can learn from pop culture. Okay, maybe “great” is a stretch. But certainly, there are lessons to be learned.
Including:
Lesson Learned: The importance of a visual representation of your fitness goals.
Show: Pumpin’ Up with Hans and Franz from SNL
Remember the old Hanz and Franz skits from Saturday Night Live? Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon as two Austrian weight lifters who had a show dedicated to helping “Pump YOU Up!” Well, they always had that picture of their cousin, Arnold Schwarzenegger in the background as their inspiration for what they were working towards. And yes, Schwarzenegger type muscles might not be what our goals are, but what a great idea to have a representation of your own personal goals up for you to look at everyday to remind you of what you are working towards!
This is even something that we encourage our clients to do with vision boards, and often help them create.
Lesson Learned: Exercise has real world applications, and vice versa
Movie: Karate Kid
Do you remember Mister Miyagi making Daniel wash and wax his van over and over? And Daniel kept complaining that he wanted to learn karate, not clean a van? But then, at a critical moment, Daniel discovered that washing that van gave him the moves (and strength and endurance) to actually do karate! This taught me that exercise affects and helps us in every category of our lives.
A friend once told me that every situation in life can teach us lessons. I guess that’s true whether those situations are real or imaginary.
Have any of your favorite shows or movies taught you fitness lessons? We’d love to see what you come up with.
